Lajos Smidt (1903–1975), retired hospital director, chief surgeon, who donated his valuable private collection to the city of Szombathely and the public of Vas County. The city of Szombathely housed the Smidt Museum in the historic building at Hollán Ernő utca 2, next to the bishop's palace, opposite the County Hall. The building was built in 1772-73 on the castle walls of the medieval castle and on the southeast corner bastion. ISEUM Savariense Archaeological Workshop and Repository

Szombathely, Rákóczi Ferenc utca 6-8.

In the fall of 1955, as a result of an unfortunate accident, they came across an archaeological find of unique importance, the marble carvings and building remains of a temple of the Egyptian goddess Isis in Szombathely.
The Iseum gained significant cultural importance in a short time, the stylized image of the church facade was even included in the city coat of arms. An exhibition pavilion was built over the ruins, and the sanctuary courtyard hosted opera performances and light music concerts in the summer. In the 1960s, the Isis sanctuary in Savaria gained national recognition and international status. Over the decades, however, its condition deteriorated, until the world-famous stone monuments were saved together with research that was restarted in 2001.
In an exhibition space that meets the needs of the 21st century, the religious history permanent exhibition entitled Isis Savaria Otthona can be seen, in which the general public can see the memorabilia of the Isis-Serapis veneration of the Roman imperial era and the private and official cults that permeated the everyday life of the people of the time. In addition to the interactive presentation, children's activities, temporary exhibitions and varied programs await visitors throughout the year.

Eclectic main square

The strangely shaped Main Square of the city of Szombathely was already spread out in the 13th century, in a similar shape, i.e. in a triangular shape, even then outside the city walls. Fairs and markets were held here, according to some sources, the city got its name: Szombathely from the Saturday market days. The main square is the center of Szombathely, both culturally and socially; a popular walking and meeting place for local youth, families and tourists visiting the city. During the renovation in 2006, the square received a new pavement, benches and a fountain, but its medieval floor plan was not changed. On the west side of the square stands the Holy Trinity statue created by János Hudecz, restored to its original place in 2000, and erected in the 18th century in memory of the victims of the 1711 plague. Opposite the memorial column, beyond a flower bed, the city's fountain is located at Blaskó János Faunok c. with its group of sculptures. Not far from the fountain, you can see the statue of James Joyce, the author of the famous novel Ulysses, an interesting and remarkable work by the sculptor Gábor Veres, which is halfway out of the wall of a house and leans on his walking stick. The location is no coincidence, as the family of the protagonist of the world-famous novel, the Bloom family, actually lived in this house... Walking along Fő tér, baroque, classicist and eclectic residential buildings alternate.
The archaeologists chose a very special way to present a Roman crossroads at the OTP branch on Fő tér. The intersection of one of the main streets of the former Savaria, along with the uncovered section of the human-high sewer network underneath, can be admired by all visitors through the glass floor of the customer area.

Cathedral - Bishop's Palace Szombathely

Szombathely, Mindszenty József tér 1.

Our cathedral rises between the Bishop's Palace and the Diocesan College (formerly a seminary), artistically uniting these three building blocks. The floor plan of the church built in honor of Our Lady of Sarlós is shaped like a Latin cross, and in terms of style it is classicizing baroque. The facade is joined by two slender towers. Its exterior facade is divided by four Tuscan and four Ionic columns. On the pillars: statues of Moses, Saint John the Baptist, Saint Peter and Saint Paul. These and the statues on both sides of the main altar were made by the Austrian sculptor Philipp Prokop (1740-1814). The female figure sitting above the pillars is a chalice (faith), a child each with the allegory of a hook (hope) and a cross (love). In terms of size, the Cathedral is the third largest church after Esztergom and Eger, with a capacity of 5,000 people. The monumental work of the baroque style leaning towards classicism was built between 1791-1797, but its interior decoration was not completed until 1813. The original ceiling frescoes were made by Josepf Winterhalder (1743-1807) and Anton Spreng (1770-1845), unfortunately they were destroyed as a result of the bombing of Szombathely.
The Herma of St. Martin, placed on the altar, contains the relic bones of the saint, which were presented to the diocese in 1913 by the Archbishop of Tours. The tomb under the Cathedral is the burial place of the bishops and canons of Szombathely.

The Bishop's Palace

The late-baroque Episcopal Palace, designed by Hefele Menyhért in 1783, was built at the end of the 18th century. From the vaulted driveway on the ground floor, an ornate staircase leads to the most beautiful room of the palace, the interior of which is decorated with frescoes by Anton Maulbertsch. Sala Terrena, the first museum in our country, built on a former medieval castle, can be visited on the ground floor. Here you can see stones with inscriptions from Roman times collected by Bishop János Szily, which were once admired by King Matthias. The walls of the room are decorated with frescoes by Dorffmaister Savaria, which capture ancient memories. In 1991 II. Pope János Pál blessed the faithful from the balcony of the Episcopal Palace.
